Tooth Extractions Reviews
"My family has been under Dr. Heher's dental care for nearly 20 years. He is a consummate professional who is intensely passionate about dentistry. He continually expands his knowledge base and technical skills. Most importantly, he is a genuinely caring and gentle man. His office staff reflects his energy and focus, and the appointment times result in very little (if any!) wait time and provide for all the time needed to give full attention to our concerns and care. His office is great at accommodating emergencies, too. His routine dental care has always been top-notch, but two events lead me to writing this review. Many years ago on a major holiday, my then young son fell and broke his two front teeth. Dr. Heher did a most incredible repair and to this day, no one can tell that there has ever been a problem. Dr. Heher's aesthetic dentistry skills, combined with his determination to have an excellent outcome, give impressive results. More recently, my handicapped sister was having difficulty with her dentist - all that dentist wanted to do were extractions. He told her that her teeth were not salvageable in any way. I brought my sister to Dr. Heher for a second opinion and consultation. He spent a great deal of time explaining our options and worked closely with us to come up with a solution that would avoid extractions. He worked in conjunction with another specialist he recommended, and the end result is that my sister's teeth have been saved. His expertise, patience, compassion and caring are so evident in how he treats all of his patients. He is a dentist's dentist. Dr. Heher is everything a dentist should be and more. -Drs. "I was in Bethany Beach DE on vacation with tooth pain. I had a scheduled tooth extraction scheduled for when I got home. The pain was unbearable and there were no offices open on a Saturday and I stumbled upon Dr. Heher’s office an hour away from where I was staying. It was meant to be! They had a cancellation and got me in that day. As soon as I walked through the door I felt comfortable and knew I was in good hands. The entire staff was extremely friendly and Dr. Heher explained everything to me and that helped calm my nerves! The tooth extraction went well and it saved the rest of my vacation! The office called to check up on me and made sure I was doing okay. If I lived in the area, Dr. Heher would be my dentist for sure! I now know where to go if I am staying in the area and need dental attention. Many thanks to Dr. Heher and your entire team!!"- L.L. / Google / Sep 07, 2018

If your tooth has been broken in an accident or damaged from decay, Dr. Heher will make every effort to repair it with bonding, a filling, or a crown. However, a tooth may be too damaged and will need to be extracted to prevent the damage from spreading — and to save the health of the remaining teeth. You could also need an extraction to remove teeth that are causing crowding in your mouth and affect the appearance of your smile. In older children, baby teeth that have not fallen out naturally may need to be extracted so they don't block the incoming permanent teeth. If you need orthodontic treatment, you may require an extraction to make room for other teeth as they move into their proper position.
What To Expect
Extractions are performed in our office with local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth being treated. Nitrous oxide sedation may be used depending on the extent of the procedure and to help keep you relaxed if you have any dental anxieties. As soon as you are anesthetized, Dr. Heher will begin the extraction by loosening the tooth prior to the actual removal, similar to how you lost baby teeth. Dr. Heher may prescribe antibiotics that should be taken before and/or after the process — in case you have a current infection, if your immune system is weak, if the procedure is prolonged, or if you have other specific medical conditions.
While your mouth heals, you should avoid spitting, smoking, and using straws. The duration of your recovery process will vary based on the complexity of your dental extraction. Eat soft, cool food and take it easy for the first few days after an extraction. Dr. Heher will discuss what to expect during your recovery and the best ways to care for your mouth. Your mouth may or may not be swollen after the extraction, so Dr. Heher recommends cold compresses and over-the-counter pain medication to combat any pain or swelling. Besides any suggested follow-up visits, you should continue to schedule appointments at Smiles! Dentistry by Dr. Joseph Heher for dental examinations and cleanings so Dr. Heher can monitor your dental health after an extraction.
A tooth extraction is usually covered by dental insurance, but your sedation method may or may not be fully covered. Before your procedure, we will contact your insurance provider to ascertain your specific coverage and estimate your out-of-pocket costs. If you don't have dental insurance, Dr. Heher can talk to you about the many payment methods we accept along with information on medical financing.
