Best Candidates

If your tooth has been broken in an accident or damaged from decay, Dr. Heher will make every effort to repair it with bonding, a filling, or a crown. However, a tooth may be too damaged and will need to be extracted to prevent the damage from spreading — and to save the health of the remaining teeth. You could also need an extraction to remove teeth that are causing crowding in your mouth and affect the appearance of your smile. In older children, baby teeth that have not fallen out naturally may need to be extracted so they don't block the incoming permanent teeth. If you need orthodontic treatment, you may require an extraction to make room for other teeth as they move into their proper position.

What To Expect

Extractions are performed in our office with local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth being treated. Nitrous oxide sedation may be used depending on the extent of the procedure and to help keep you relaxed if you have any dental anxieties. As soon as you are anesthetized, Dr. Heher will begin the extraction by loosening the tooth prior to the actual removal, similar to how you lost baby teeth. Dr. Heher may prescribe antibiotics that should be taken before and/or after the process — in case you have a current infection, if your immune system is weak, if the procedure is prolonged, or if you have other specific medical conditions.

While your mouth heals, you should avoid spitting, smoking, and using straws. The duration of your recovery process will vary based on the complexity of your dental extraction. Eat soft, cool food and take it easy for the first few days after an extraction. Dr. Heher will discuss what to expect during your recovery and the best ways to care for your mouth. Your mouth may or may not be swollen after the extraction, so Dr. Heher recommends cold compresses and over-the-counter pain medication to combat any pain or swelling. Besides any suggested follow-up visits, you should continue to schedule appointments at Smiles! Dentistry by Dr. Joseph Heher for dental examinations and cleanings so Dr. Heher can monitor your dental health after an extraction.

Insurance Coverage

A tooth extraction is usually covered by dental insurance, but your sedation method may or may not be fully covered. Before your procedure, we will contact your insurance provider to ascertain your specific coverage and estimate your out-of-pocket costs. If you don't have dental insurance, Dr. Heher can talk to you about the many payment methods we accept along with information on medical financing.
