Dental Crowns Overview
If a single tooth is severely damaged or worn down and cannot be restored with a filling, or if a filling will not offer adequate strength and longevity, the tooth can be protected with a dental crown. Also known as a cap, crowns are custom made to fit completely over your tooth to protect it from future dental deterioration. At Smiles! Dentistry by Dr. Joseph Heher in Salisbury, MD, a dental crown may be used to treat a large area of decay, protect a weak tooth, restore a cracked tooth, or cover a discolored tooth. Dr. Heher offers dental crowns with different materials to match your specific needs including all-ceramic, porcelain fused to gold, and gold crowns. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Heher to learn about how a crown can strengthen or repair a tooth while also boosting the overall health and appearance of your smile.

"AWESOME DENTIST! I drove to his office in Salisbury from Accomack co., Va...because there are barely any good dentists left on the shore. I was surprised and amazed that they put me in a 2 hr slot to start.. to become a new patient...including consult in his office first, the full set exrays, including a “pan”- full head x-ray, then he performed the Exam, checked every tooth’ pockets for recession with a tool, then I got my cleaning by the hygienist, and the lastly I had a filling replaced,(which looks like a virgin tooth-beautiful job! Oh and part of his “exam” includes hands-on manipulation to test you jaw joints and last but not least got a oral cancer scan with a blu-light! To say I was impressed is an understatement! Highly recommend this dentist, I think he has been in business for over 40 yrs...and it shows! Oh, and one other strange but effective procedure he did,and never had this done before, but wow to get several shots of Novacaine and did NOT feel it.. he used a vibrator on my cheek as he injected the medication. Crazy but it worked! 💜Will be back for sure!!!!( not cheap, but you only have one mouth and one set of teeth!)"- C.M. / Google / Feb 14, 2020

Best Candidates for Dental Crowns
Crowns may be needed in a variety of situations. They can be used to protect a weak, decaying tooth to keep it from fracturing or they can hold together a cracked tooth. Crowns can also fix a worn-down tooth. They can be utilized to support a tooth with a large cavity that cannot hold a normal filling, anchor a dental bridge in place, or mask misshapen or discolored teeth. Crowns can be cemented to the tooth or attached to a dental implant. The material of the crown is selected based on the individual needs of the patient. At your consultation, Dr. Heher will discuss your options and help you select the best crown for your needs.
What To Expect with Dental Crowns
During your consultation, Dr. Heher will take impressions of your teeth so the crown can be custom made to that tooth. If needed, a temporary crown can be placed over your tooth while your custom crown is being fabricated. Once your dental crown is ready, the area to be treated will be numbed with a local anesthetic. Nitrous oxide sedation options may be available to provide you with more comfort while in the dental chair. The crown will be cemented onto the tooth or attached to the dental implant. Once in place, Dr. Heher will adjust the fit so your bite is correct.
Dental Crowns afterwards
Since only local anesthesia is used, you should be able to leave once your crown is placed and return to whatever you had planned for that day. Dr. Heher or a member of his team will discuss the best way to care for your crown including foods to avoid and the best way to keep it clean. During your annual exams at Smiles! Dentistry by Dr. Joseph Heher, we will assess your crown and if needed, adjust the fit for comfort. For existing crowns, he will assess if and when a crown needs to be replaced, but with proper care, it should last for many years. If you have any issues with your crown (or any crown for that matter, if it feels loose or for some reason falls out), contact our office right away. Do not try to fix it or put it back in yourself since this can lead to a bad fit, infection, or worse, swallowing the crown while you are asleep.
Dental Crowns Insurance Coverage
Depending on your dental insurance, part of the cost of your crown may be covered. Once we contact your insurance provider, our office will be able to better estimate your personal expenses. During your consultation, Dr. Heher can help you choose the best material indicated for your crown. He will also discuss payment options including medical financing in order to make your treatment more affordable.
