When one or a few teeth are missing, it's more than just an aesthetic problem. Missing teeth can cause other teeth to begin to shift and eventually affect the ability to digest food properly leading to systemic body ramifications. Missing teeth can result in harmful stresses when you bite, increased pain during chewing, or even trouble speaking. A dental bridge restores the appearance and health of your mouth by spanning gaps with a false tooth/teeth (if more than one adjacent tooth is missing) supported by either dental implants, your natural teeth, or a combination of both. At Smiles! Dentistry by Dr. Joseph Heher in Salisbury, MD, Dr. Heher offers custom-designed bridges using top-quality materials that will help to restore beautiful smiles. If you have missing teeth, please schedule an appointment with Dr. Heher to learn about your restoration options with a custom bridge.

People with missing teeth don't merely have an appearance issue — gaps between the teeth can have a powerful impact on your oral health. The fact is your mouth should be carefully balanced and a gap can affect its function. In time, a missing tooth can lead to teeth shifting, creating bite problems (underbite, crossbite, overbite), and atrophy of the gums and jawbone. A dental bridge requires the presence of surrounding teeth or implants with ample underlying bone to be strong enough to support the restoration. This requires sufficient jawbone density and adequate gum thickness. Dr. Heher will assess your teeth, gums, and jaw during your exam and consultation to help you select the best type of bridge (traditional, cantilever, Maryland bonded, or resin bonded) and material (all porcelain, metal, or porcelain fused to metal).
What To Expect
After your teeth or implants have been prepared to receive a bridge, Dr. Heher will take impressions of the teeth or implants so a dental laboratory can create and fabricate your custom bridge. Usually, a temporary bridge or restoration can be placed while your custom one is being fabricated. Once your restoration is ready for placement, the area of your mouth where the bridge will be placed will be anesthetized if needed; nitrous oxide sedation options may be used if you have anxiety or a strong gag reflex to ensure comfortableness during the procedure. The dental bridge will either be cemented in place or attached to dental implants, depending on the bridge design you and Dr. Heher selected during your consultation. Dr. Heher will carefully adjust the fit of the bridge so it feels and functions correctly in your mouth.
Once your bridge is in place, you should notice an improvement in the function and appearance of your teeth. You may need a second visit at Smiles! Dentistry by Dr. Joseph Heher to inspect the fit of your bridge a few weeks after placement. Dr. Heher or a member of his team will show you how to maintain your restoration including the best way to clean it and if you need to avoid certain foods. It is crucial to regularly clean under and around your bridge and mouth daily since cavities can still develop underneath the restoration. With proper care, your custom bridge can last for many years. However, you still need to continue to attend appointments at Smiles! Dentistry by Dr. Joseph Heher for your annual dental exams and semi-annual cleanings. At your dental exam, Dr. Heher will evaluate the wear and condition of your custom bridge to determine its status.
Restorations such as dental bridges are usually partially covered by most dental insurance companies, especially if the teeth being replaced were extracted while you were covered by the insurance plan. A member of our team will contact your dental insurance provider to help you determine the extent of your insurance coverage. Smiles! Dentistry by Dr. Joseph Heher accepts many payment methods including medical financing that can be talked about at your consultation with Dr. Heher. He can also help you select the best type and material for your bridge to fit both your needs and budget.
