One can't always avoid accidents such as a bad fall or a chipped tooth. Sometimes teeth can become discolored for a number of reasons including medication or older generational filling materials. Dr. Heher offers dental bonding and tooth re-contouring to improve small cosmetic flaws often in just one dental appointment. He has extensive experience in cosmetic bonding and re-contouring treatments and has studied with some of the most renowned artisans and scientists of dentistry from three continents to learn advanced techniques. An effective and quick cosmetic treatment, bonding and re-contouring applies semi-solid composite resin (the same material used for tooth-colored fillings) to hide tooth discoloration, fill gaps between teeth, make a tooth longer, or even change the shape of a tooth. If you want a great way to improve your smile, schedule an appointment to learn more about bonding and re-contouring at Smiles! Dentistry by Dr. Joseph Heher.

Dental bonding and contouring can fix gaps, chips, cracks, discoloration, tooth length, and other flaws. Bonding and contouring is an affordable cosmetic procedure and often can be completed in a single appointment. It usually requires minimal tooth removal compared to porcelain veneers or crowns and can last from 5 – 10 years or longer if cared for properly. Bonding and re-contouring are ideal for minor flaws; if more extensive changes are indicated, another cosmetic or restorative procedure may be better suited. During your consultation, Dr. Heher will listen to needs and offer options.
What To Expect
Dental bonding and/or recontouring is usually completed in one visit to our office in Salisbury, MD. Due to the minimalist nature of tooth reduction for bonding, anesthesia is often not needed, but options for nitrous oxide sedation can be discussed with Dr. Heher for concerns like fear, anxiety, or a strong gag reflex. Dr. Heher begins by applying the semi-solid composite resin to the areas being restored. The composite resin will be hardened with a special light before additional layers are added. Once the bonding process is set, Dr. Heher will contour and polish the composite resin and natural teeth for an even, smooth, virtually invisible result.
Once you've undergone dental bonding you should avoid staining drinks and food (like tea, coffee, and tobacco) for two days; while the composite material is hard by the time you leave the office, it continues to cure and harden over several more days. While the material looks like a tooth—it is important to remember that it is not, and the bonding material can chip and stain. We recommend avoiding biting on hard objects such as ice cubes, hard candy, and pens, and brush your teeth immediately after eating. Teeth that have been bonded and contoured should be cleaned like regular teeth with regular flossing, brushing, and/or use of mouthwash. Dental cleanings at Smiles! Dentistry by Dr. Joseph Heher will help to remove stains from the composite resin. With proper care, dental bonding can last up to ten years or even longer. During your annual dental exam, Dr. Heher will help you decide if the dental bonding procedure needs to be redone to maintain your smile.
Dental bonding and/or recontouring is often a cosmetic procedure so it is typically not covered by insurance IF it is done solely for cosmetic reasons, although insurance carriers will probably reimburse if teeth are decayed or damaged from an accident. Our office can contact your insurance company to confirm your coverage, but most patients will pay out-of-pocket for this procedure. At your consultation with Dr. Heher, he can discuss an estimate of cost and the payment options we accept at Smiles! Dentistry by Dr. Joseph Heher.
