While nothing, except possibly implants, can replace your own teeth, custom dentures can be a good option to replace several missing teeth. Removable dentures can renew your smile and help you speak and eat with more confidence. Salisbury, MD dentist Dr. Joseph Heher provides either full or partial dentures. Full dentures can replace all the teeth on either one arch, or both arches, while partial dentures use remaining healthy teeth as support to anchor replacement of the missing teeth. At Smiles! Dentistry by Dr. Joseph Heher, we will help you decide whether full or partial dentures fit your needs, customized to look beautiful and natural, while also maintaining functionality. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Heher to learn more if dentures may be suitable for you.

You may be a good candidate for dentures if you are missing most or all of your teeth, and your gums and jawbone are still healthy. If you have some remaining natural teeth, they may be used and retained to support a partial denture. Additionally, Dr. Heher may suggest overdentures for a more secure fit, preserving the roots of the teeth as well as the surrounding bone, providing better retention than a conventional denture. At your initial consultation with Dr. Heher, he will examine your oral health and explain your treatment options based on your needs and budget.
What To Expect
If needed, Dr. Heher may or may not extract any remaining teeth before taking oral impressions, depending upon the situation with which your mouth presents at the time of the exam. Partial dentures will be colored to match your natural teeth for a seamless finish. Dr. Heher works with a dental laboratory technician who is certified by the National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology (NBC) and is skilled in making high-quality dentures. Additionally, most patients will receive a wax try-in to offer an opportunity to check the appearance of the denture/s before the dentures are fully processed in acrylic. Once your custom dentures are made, Dr. Heher will fit them so they are secure and comfortable as possible. Often removable dentures require an adhesive due to lack of a sufficiently thick bony ridge after extractions; the only way around this is to have titanium implants placed and the dentures attached to the implants. Dentures must be removed from the mouth to be cleaned and properly cared for. They shouldn’t be worn 24/7—the tissue under the denture needs to “breath’. Implant-supported dentures require a more extensive procedure process and are secured by bio-compatible metal posts implanted into the jawbone. Before determining which type of denture is appropriate for your needs, Dr. Heher will help you gain a better understanding of what you can expect of the treatment process for each type of denture. He will also discuss after-care steps that each denture requires.
It may require some time before your new dentures feel natural, but it should eventually be easier to eat and speak normally. There will probably initially be sore spots which must be adjusted for comfort. After a period of time, if your dentures feel loose, return to Smiles! Dentistry by Dr. Joseph Heher to have your dentures refitted. At home, you will need to keep your dentures clean by brushing them twice daily and using denture cleaning solutions at night. Removable dentures should be soaked overnight in denture cleaning solutions to prevent them from drying out. It is important that you continue to schedule cleanings and exams at Smiles! Dentistry by Dr. Joseph Heher so Dr. Heher can examine the wear and fit of your restoration as well as the health of your jaw and gums with periodic oral cancer examinations. He will advise you if your dentures need to be repaired or replaced, but with ideal care and depending on the denture type, your dentures should last for several years.
If you have dental insurance, part of the cost of your dentures will usually be at least partially covered. We will contact your dental insurance to understand your benefits and out-of-pocket costs. During your initial consultation with Dr. Heher, he will develop your treatment plan so your dentures fit both your needs and budget. For help making your dentures affordable, whether you have dental insurance or not, Smiles! Dentistry accepts many forms of payment including medical financing.
