Dental sealants are a simple prevention treatment to guard against decay and cavities. Sealants are thin, pliable plastic materials that can be applied to the tops of the back teeth (premolars and molars). Once applied, dental sealants harden and block out bacteria, food particles, and plaque, to protect against cavities developing. Sealants can last many years with proper care including a regular home oral hygiene routine. Dental sealants not only improve your oral hygiene and prevent cavities, but they can also decrease the need for more invasive dental treatments in the future. Talk to Dr. Heher during your dental exam at our Salisbury, MD office to decide if sealants are a good choice for you or your child.

"My husband started off as a patient and had nothing but great things to say about all of the staff and how comfortable the whole process was. When I had a problem I called and was seen quickly. I have tried a few dentists over the years and I will say this place is where I have felt most at ease. I cant say enough about the staff, they are all friendly, and compassionate. I was also impressed that Dr. Heher calls to check on how you are doing the next day. I have never had a dentist do that. We are glad we found this dentist and will always use them."- L.S. / Google / Mar 21, 2019

Good candidates for dental sealants would be anyone who is prone to getting cavities in deep grooves on their posterior teeth. Most often, sealants are recommended for younger children and teens who may have a more difficult time maintaining a regular oral hygiene routine. The application of dental sealants is a fast, simple treatment that generally requires no anesthesia or sedation, which makes it an easy procedure for all ages (after all, some adults may be late “bloomers”).
What to Expect
Prior to your consultation, Dr. Heher will assess your teeth to determine if sealants are right for you. Prior to the actual application, your teeth will be cleaned and polished to remove tartar, plaque, and bacteria. Then Dr. Heher will brush on the sealant and set it with a special light. After the application, Dr. Heher will ensure that the sealant is in the correct position and doesn’t interfere with your bite or chewing when the jaws close and the teeth in both arches touch each other.
Following treatment, you should be able to return to your regular day’s activities. It is important that you continue to follow a regular home oral care routine, including brushing twice every day, along with mouthwash use and flossing; because a tooth is sealed, doesn’t mean it cannot decay in flossing areas where there are no grooves and sealants cannot be applied. With good care, sealants can last for years. During your periodic dental exam at Smiles! Dentistry by Dr. Joseph Heher, he will determine if your dental sealants are still intact or need to be reapplied.
Sealants are a preventive procedure and most dental insurance companies cover some of the cost for children. Coverage will vary, especially in older patients (unfortunately insurance carriers don’t realize not everyone “blossoms at the same age” and some people are “late bloomers” with regards to developing areas that need sealants), so we can help you determine your coverage by contacting your insurance and then calculating your costs. Smiles! Dentistry by Dr. Joseph Heher accepts many payment methods and we can help you with low-interest medical financing if needed.
The Right Prevention
You or your child may be one of the many people who could benefit from dental sealants to protect the teeth. Dental sealants are a great option to prevent future dental problems and procedures such as cavities or fillings. A relatively easy and quick procedure, sealants can help you and your family experience better dental visits and improved overall health.
